My last two quilts for my grandsons were a whole cloth quilt (he went on equilter.com and picked it out with a little help from his mom navigating the site) and a Sock Monkey quilt with big (9" I think) squares of several fabrics set in diagonal rows. He picked Sock Monkeys....so I would suggest that you ask for---or pick---- a theme and go from there. My experience with the boys (I have three grandsons) is that they are really hard on quilts so I try to have as few seams to maybe pull open as possible, meaning that I leave the fabrics in big pieces, and pick great fabrics.... Hope this helps!

I would ask him what he likes -- sports, dinosaurs, animals, music, etc., and then colors and go from there.

This is the one I made for my 10 year old. It's at my MIL's Getting assembled. As soon as I get it back, I'll post a finished pic. I also have it in an album here, but it opes into a HUGE picture.

I made quilts for my nephews ever since they were 3 and 9 . After the first which I designed they have always handed me designs of their own the 3 year old even managed funny shaped squares with shapes in side which were dinosaurs. Ask him to design his own. The eldest had a very simple squares pattern but he wanted very specific colours to go with his room colours.

What is he interested in? I like panels as a center and then border it any way you want. At 11, you want a quilt that he can grow up with and enjoy at least until he graduates high school.

I made a fishing quilt for my nephew using a panel and 5 borders of different sizes and colors, all having to do with being outside camping or fishing. He loves it because he loves to fish. That quilt will last him a lifetime - he won't take it home because he doesn't want his dog and little brother to mess it up! That makes me think he will take care of it long after I am gone!

I made one for a grandson and wanted it to be something he would like to use for many years. I used "bear claw" and made it home spun. Used as many different fabrics as I could find.

Have you made up your mind? There are great scouting fabrics and patriotic fabrics which would certainly grow up with him. I made this scouting quilt.

It would work well with other fabric choices too.
