hmmmm.... I think I would stick to a simple quilt pattern and use India themed fabrics, such as paisleys, filigrees, mandalas and such. The fabric patterns would tend to be busy and bold colors, hence why I would stick to a simple quilt pattern so the fabric can shine. ....I'm a beginner quilter and don't really know what I'm talking about, so take this advice with a grain of salt!

I saw a quilt recently that had large dresdens scattered, with some overlapping. They would look like mandalas if made from batiks. Try searching pinterest for dresden plate quilts - it's probably where I saw it.

You may want to go to youtube. Jenny Doan (MSQC) has a tutorial on the double slice quilt. I use that all the time. I think it would be beautiful in India colors.

So you are going to make the quilt in the colors and theme of the wedding rather than their home?

I agree w/ Cash's Mom I'd try and find out the colors / style they decorate the home with. My wedding colors were red / black /white but would have never had a place to use those colors in my home.

I did a little searching and most of what I found was that a lot of quilts in India are made from old saris. They also have quite a bohemian look them.

Hope this can give you a starting point.
