I keep thinkingit would be interesting to see pinwheels in the corners where the blocks meet.

I estimated the strips in the original photo to be about 1" wide, assuming the binding was a standard quarter-inch wide.

Peggi, I like your variations of colors and number of strips.

Peckish - I like the alternate light out - dark out in the many strips version, but not so much in the fewer strips version.
Thanks for the visual on the many possible ways it can be done!

I've decided to forget about the basket-weave effect, and go with this design:
    http://www.quilterscache.com/images3...srailfence.jpg

If I make the strips 3" wide and lengthen the quilt by two rows (6 wide, 8 long) with borders 3", 8" and 5 1/2", finished dimensions will be 75" x 90". How can I estimate fabric requirement? Is there a formula?

Colors (to harmonize with house's interior) will be pale olive ("pinwheel" centers), oatmeal, and white/cream. Olive back and binding. Hoping to find good batiks in these colors because the recipient is not a candidate for a traditional, old-fashioned quilt. It will be a housewarming gift for my cousin's new beach house.
