I have finished my first quilt, a "Lucky Stars." I plan to SID with machine and hand quilt hearts in the middle of each star. I assume I would do the machining first, but being new to this, thought I would ask the experts!

I would most definitely do the machine quilting first. Then the hand quilting.

    PS Welcome to the board.

In this case, I would machine first.

I have not done both, but I think that is the way I would do it. I have not really thought about doing both. I really think that I may just give it a try. Thanks for the idea:) Welcome from Louisiana:)

I like the idea of doing the major portion with the machine, but some hand quilting.

I did a windmill block quilt where every other block was solid. I stipled in the solid areas but left the windmills alone when all was said and done it looked like it was missing something, so I went back and hand quilted the windmills. It turned out great.

Machine quilt first. This holds everything together for the hand quilting.

I agree with the 'machine quilt first' crowd.. Think of it as basting in preparation for hand quilting. It keeps everything from shifting. No need to baste! Lovely!
