This post has been the most informative post I've had the pleasure of reading. Has helped me out "heaps". But it has also been mind boggling, grin. Thanks for the original post and everyone who has participated in replys.

I have several vintage machines on my list: a long bed black 301 Singer, a 500 Rocketeer, a 401 that works better than the one I have now and a couple more Necchi's. Anything left I would spend on accessories for my vintage machines.

Since you quilt, the Janome 6600. The only difference in the 7700 is the higher price and free arm...as far as group discussions. Just depends on if you want embroidery too. I have the 6600 for home and a 3160 Janome for class. The 3160 is only 12.5 lbs. but has the auto thread cutter for piecing.
The Janome has Accufeed rather than a bulky walking foot. You can see where you are sewing....had a walking foot for decades...will not go back. Other more expensive brands now have the built in "walking" feature, but for the money and less service history, I would go witht he Janome. I also just bought a slightly used 350E....is has a 5.5 x 7/9" field and USB port for plug in designs you can get from the internet. It is a dream, it stops and tells you to change threads, auto cuts, & much more. It too, is not expensive....PM me if you have any other questions on the 6600 for quilting. I belong to a Janome group where you can find all kinds of information and connection to getting 15% off of all Janome accessories for your machine.

I just purchased a Viking Husqvarna Sapphire 835 sewing/quilting machine last month for $999. I LOVE it. It doesn't do embroidery but does everything else and runs like a dream. They do have embroidery machines if that is what you are looking for. The Sapphire 875 is the next step up and is $1500. If I had the extra money I would have upgraded to that. Check with the dealers in your area. Go with one that offers classes with the new machine you purchase and be sure they have a repair shop if you need it. I have owned a Kenmore and a singer but would definately not purchase a singer again.

I agree..I've had a Singer, Viking, Sears, & finally bought a Bernina, it is the best of all that I've owned before. I also agree that it has a lot to do with the service/repair that you get after you buy the machine.
