Got my babylock espire floor model at a show for 1800, love it to death, came with free classes. Whatever you do just make sure you buy from a reputable dealer, that they give you classes, and are close for servicing your machine. You don't want to buy one come to find out that the closest repairman is 100+ miles away. I also love brothers, and have also heard good things about the laura ashley NX-2000/Babylock Symphony(updated QC-1000/ Babylock Espire). I hear good things about Janomes too. I have alot of accessories to brother which is why i stick with the brothers and babylock brand. Something you might want to consider if you already have a prefered brand of machine getting 2 compatible machine so that you can interchange accessories

Thank you so much everyone for all your helpful advice. I am going to start looking at the Janome's 1st since they are so highly recommended but I will test drive quite a few as I have a few months before I even have enough saved up to buy anything.

I'm a big fan of Janome. I had the 9000, sold it to buy the 10000. And just love that machine. I have the Janome Platinum for a travel machine. And just bought the 7700 (2 weeks ago) to start quilting/FM more. I have never had one problem with any of those machines. I sew with a small group of great ladies twice a month and they all have Janome machines as well. I had a tough time deciding on a new machine, thought about buying a sit down mid arm. My sewing friends all have the 6600 and 7700, so I decided (after months of searching) to get a machine to do everything on..... ..Good luck in your search....

I just bought a used Bernina with the BSR for $2000. I also own two Pfaffs, one of them an older model that I would never part with, and a newer one that's the same age as the Bernina I just bought. There's something to be said for both machines, each having options that the other doesn't, but the quality of the Bernina just stands out. I am so excited to finally be able to own one. Bernina dealers offer specials on trade ins throughout the year, and sometimes you can find them at the local high school when they get rid of their teaching machines and get new ones, if you know who to talk to.

I have the Babylock Ellegante and I love it....I have my FW beside it for when I hook up the embroidery unit to my BL :) The thing I love about Babylock is you can trade up....This is my third babylock (2nd trade up)
