Sure would like to have this pattern, what is it called?
It is beautiful
The pattern is called Barbed Wire Fence from the Twosey-Foursey Quilts Book by Cathy Wierzbicki.

I consider pastel colors as being neutrial as they are not so bold as full colors.

How about something like these colors. The block is a log cabin so there's no need to buy a pattern and you could lay the blocks out in several different ways.

I am thinking creams, tans, browns......any suggestions? I liked the "creme brulee" quilt that was posted and then gone..... but it was just two colors.
This quilt won first place at Road2CA a couple of years ago. It's my daughter, Lisa's.

Gadszook, here I am adding another comment.

I know I would ask the recipient what colors are hers or theirs. There are just too many idea of what neutral colors are.

Also, some prints would drive me absolutely crazy even if they were in the color I chose. I like 30's fabrics but absolutely love so many batiks. Bigggg difference. A leopard print would absolutely not be me.

Good luck and please post results and reactions.

Here's another neutral one I just saw right here on the message board. It looks like a quilt one of my friends would love as her color scheme is cream on cream. She told me they painted one wall in their living room so much darker than the others. I tried as hard as I could but I couldn't find the darker one.

What is neutral to the pastor's mom, may not be neutral to you or the pastor and his wife. I would just ask the recipients what they would like. The quilt wouldn't be a surprise to them, but at least you would know you had given them exactly what they wanted.
So true.. if the person is NOT a quilter who made this statement she may mean something completely different then a true neutral color pallet. When in doubt.. ASK... lol
This subject has come up before, and I would suggest the same thing I did a long time ago.
TALK TO THE BRIDE AND ASK HER!!!

We only have other opinions on this, with some lovely suggestions, but the bride might have in her mind a future bedroom decorated in a totally different way that does not include the one they will be using at this point in time.

I would definitely not use dark brown and black.... would kill it... soft colours would be my choice like creams, tans etc...
