we just had our county quilt show and there was a quilt there that the lady had used her decorative stitches to make the complete quilt.
when I develope my pictures, I will post the quilt picture.
I plan to make a quilt using my fancy stitches.

I think there is a difference in what my machine calls "Decorative stitches" and what it calls "Utility stitches" verses what many of your machines call the different stitches.
I have oodles of Utility stitches and those are adjustable in stitch width and length (there are zig-zags-at least 8 different kinds, rick-rack--I counted 9 different choices, curving lines, stiple--very small, etc.). However, there are many more stitches under the Decorative stitch menu and many of them would make really nice quilting stitches but they are not at all adjustable in stitch width and length and are preset to a very small stitch length.

I am able to adjust the width and length of my stitches...and often do. Sometimes the default size is good as is, but if not, I do the adjusting, which lasts until I turn off my machine. Best thing to do if you do adjust your stitches, is to write down somewhere the adjustment you have made, so next time you go to sew them you can know how to set your machine for the stitch again without having to fuss with it.

I have the Janome 6600. I have used some of the decorative stitches when quilting, either in sashing or a serpentine in the ditch. A lot of people who quilt also make garments so they are probably trying to reach a larger market.

I have a Pfaff 7570 and you can adjust the length of the stitich and the width of the decorative stitch. Example: the stipple stitch can be adjusted from a "20" to a "50" but you are limited by the width of your zigzag foot opening. I took a picture which I will attach. From left to right you will see my pfaff stipple stitch at default setting which displays "20" for the stitch width. The middle column shows that same pattern with the stitch set to "40" and the far right shows the stitch set to "50". Remember though, that you have to balance the stitch length with the width parameters of your zig-zag presser foot to give an optimal stitchout. (I hope the picture comes out ok).
I think the trick would be to program a 9mm stipple stitch into the machine and that way you have the free movement in all directions that the pfaff 7570 allows.

I have a Viking Lily 550 (it's about 13yrs old) and it has the fancy stitches and I can adjust them just fine. It has a great serpentine stitch that I use a lot on quilts. I don't know how to FMQ and don't even begin to know about a long arm so if it isn't tied, it's stitched with a stitch from my Viking.
