I have a Bernina and you can make the stitches longer and wider. I use them when quilting wall hangings and other small items. Don't quilt large quilts.

I have the Janome Horizon 7700 and can change the width of some stitches and not others. Some work better for quilting than others -- I test to make sure. There are some "long stitches" that I use a lot. The serpentine can be elongated and the width can be made so it just bumps. I use the fancy stitches a lot when I quilt.
