I made a fan quilt with pinks and lace, also a rail fence with pinks to lavenders.Very feminine.I agree with everyone else, I think it's about the colors.

Hearts are also 'girley". You can find them in both pieced or applique.

Lace, flowers and/or ruffles are never on boy/manly quilts. Maybe even scallops.

The colors are the primary thing that makes a quilt masculine or feminine ... after that, I think curves are more feminine and straight-lines and 90 degree angles are more masculine. So, stars, chinese coins, bento boxes = masculine, Dresden fan, drunkard's path, wedding circle = feminine. Storm-at-sea can be either as it's straight elements form a curve and the angles are half 90/45 and half 90/60/30.

I recently made a baby girl quilt for my new grand-daughter. My DDIL wanted pink, white and black. To make it more "girly" I put a pink ruffled edge all aroung it instead of binding it the regular way. (I bought a Bernina ruffler foot...works great!)
