when i pick the pattern first i end up having a hard time settling on the right fabs for it.

Fabric_fancy, can I be your sister--thousands of yards of fabric in your stash? I am so jealous. I usually pick the pattern first, then the fabric. If I get the fabric first, I usually don't have enough for the project. Picking the fabric is the hardest for me but the most fun.
