I buy the kabob sticks from Publix there are about 100 in a package. I use the flat side. They work great. I'm always giving one away to my friends when we sew together. The package is very cheap and last a long time.

An orangewood stick, it is, or used to be used in manicures has a small end that is flat so you're not as likely to poke thru. They are wood. I would imagine you could find them at Wally World in the nail section. I do believe it is pointed on the other end.
