If you want your "picky" daughter to love the quilt you make her, do the exact pattern and colors she specifies. Otherwise you will be hurt if she doesn't react the way you think she should. By the way, she has every right to HER design and coolor preferences. The design you showed doesn't look that difficult.
I agree this could very well happen. Maybe show her the substitute quilt first and she what she thinks. You also might be able to find someone on the board to loan/sell you the ruler. I definitely think you could do the original quilt.

Thanks for all the input, everyone. You guys are always so amazing in supporting and encouraging us.
She did ok making some adjustments as she understands our budget necessities. But as some of you said, how much better to give her the exact one. Since I have several to finish before I can start hers, I think I am going to start a piggy bank for the ruler and pattern.
Yes, I would definitely do sample blocks for her approval before going on with the whole project.
I found the perfect background fabric yesterday at the goodwill. A very tiny houndstooth check in pale sage and cream in a queen-size flat 100% cotton sheet for $4. Even tho it wasn't on the half priced color ticket, I snapped that baby up anyway. LOL

The things you learn from this board!! I didn't know this website "Sokindawonderful" (love the name by the way) existed. What great modern quilts. Her rulers really look fun to use. I don't think if you had the ruler this would be that difficult to make.Good luck!!
