I used flannel. My design wall is a long curtain rod I hung the flannel from. I also made a casing at the bottom & used another rod to make it taut. I like my design because I can pin to it easily when the quilt gets heavy.

I use batting. Don't know how well anything else works, but batting on an insulation wall thing works really well for me. I just attached it with duck tape. Mine leans against closet doors and I move it when I need in my closet.

I have flannel on my working wall at home. I'm elsewhere now taking care of my mom so I picked up a crib size batting of warm and natural and pinned it to a wall. I'm here to say when I get home that old flannel is going and a queen size warm and natural batt will take it's place.

My design wall is pink Styrofoam insulation wrapped in craft felt. It is pressure fit between the floor and ceiling, so not a permanent installation. Light weight blocks stick to it well and the Styrofoam lets me pin heavier things.

I prefer flannel. Cotton batting is difficult to clean off the threads that sticks to your design wall. It also can look much nicer if you can find a print that doesn't distract from the quilt you are working on.
