I am making a design board and would like input on what is best to use for the surface.....FLANNEL or BATTING, or something else. Thanks for your suggestions!

I would say flannel, I used felt on mine and fabric does not stick as well as I would like. I made a couple of small ones out of flannel to put a block on and place by my sewing machine as I sewed the block together and I like the way the fabric sticks to the flannel.

I prefer cotton batting - if you can get 100% it works best. Some to the 80/20's work well but I don't think that the Hobbs 80/20 works well for this although I love it for quilting.

I used warm and natural batting. Works really well, but if the blocks stay up for any length of time, they start trying to come off. So, for anything long term, I just use a couple of pins.

I like a thin cotton batt.

I have batting because that was what I had available when I made my design wall. However one quilting buddy used felt and another used thin whaled corduroy and both work well. No one I know used flannel, but what the heck. If you have it and want to use it, try it.

Personally, I don't have a design wall but I have heard of people using flannel backed tablecloths for this purpose.

Eleanor Burns suggests using 'headliner' fabric. Yes, the same stuff used in cars and is at Joann's. Not sure how well it works, need more input.

I used light gray felt to cover mine because I found it on clearance for .50 a yard. My friend used vehicle headliner fabric and it holds fabric much better then flannel or felt. She bought it an auto body shop. She said it was better then what was sold at JoAnns.

I just put my design wall up all I did was thumbtack up 2 oblong tablecloths to wall, with plastic side against wall. Attached my center panel and the one sample block and it is holding just fine. $4 tablecloths from walmart
