Iron or press strips?

If you have distorted your square by ironing, then square it up you are taking away some of the fabric you needed to begin with, right? What happens when you wash that quilt? Just a question? Always wondered every time I have heard some one say that.

Nancy Zieman (sp) on her Sewing With Nancy program on PBS will take the two strips that are sewn together, holds them slightly above the ironing board, then puts the point of the iron on the seam and "presses". It works and doesn't seem to distort the strips. Give it a shot. The other thing is when the 2 strips are together, press the strips together, then do the press as you hold the strips thing. Hope that was clear.

I set the seams first (pressing) them press strips open.
You might want to practice ironing vs pressing on to identical practice strips and see if it makes a difference. If you are useing steam the chances for distortion increases - I'm told.
