My husband built me a large ironing board to fit over my regular one and now I need to cover it. Do I put batting under the ironing board fabric? Do I cover the shiny silver fabric with regular fabric? What works best?

I covered mine with layers of flannelette, then topped it with a cotton print. More fun when ironing than on a silver one!

I like it all the time and have no regrets doing it this way .... except when I am doing yardages or a quilt top. Then I think I'd prefer the silvery fabric and am considering make an elastic edged one that I could slide on and off as I need it.

I put a layer of insulbrite and cotton batting then covered with cotton. Here it is.

My DH made me one, too. I wrapped it in batting then covered it with muslin.

I didn't think of insulbrite at the time I did mine. I put down a layer of tin foil then a few layers of batting..Thin batting..I say that because I have a small board that has thick puffy underneath and I don't like it ~ then an old sheet. I just took it off the other day to wash all the starch build up off. Amazing how that happens. But it means I've been busy. =) And THAT makes me happy. =)

If you use a print, make sure you wash it first. A local quilt shop made covers out of a really pretty print. The colors ran when someone spritzed water on the fabric. It was the teachers fabric.
