Bless you for doing this! My grandson was released from the NICU on Monday and is doing great at home. Whoever charges $250 for a tiny blanket should be ashamed!

Made a couple of these several years ago. Used colorful cotton on top, dark cottton on bottom and warm and natural in between. Quilted straight lines. Nothing fancy. They needed the dense batting to deaden the sounds. Just check with them to see their specs.

I am in a group who makes isolets for the NICU at a local hospital. All are donated .Here are the sizes we use. The parents get to keep them.
    37” to 42” wide (required)
    ~ 40” to 46” long (required)
    ~ cotton or cotton/poly
    ~ any design or color(s)
~ any color or print backing

Maybe you could get together a small group of friends and make them? I look for fabric at garage sales, etc. Maybe you could ask for donations for fabric/batting etc.

Our hospital will not accept tied quilts. If you are going to make some for a specific hospital, please check for their measurements and specifications on quilting/tying.

    PREEMIE BLANKET GUIDELINES:
No smaller than(30"x30"). Our need for preemie blankets is limited to about 30 per month. About 10 of those blankets need to be fabric quilts (This is a requirement for one of our hospitals.)

I just did a Yahoo Search on Isolette blankets and came up with several sites that offer dimensions, fabric requirements, directions, etc. One site was Charlotte Threads of Love, a pdf. did an explanation on the reason for the specific requirements. Bless you for the impact you will make on so many lives.

We have a group that makes pillowcases for two area hospitals for all the children that stay in the hospitals.
It is all volunteer, so of course we pay for a lot of the material ourselves. Where do you get your funding?

From all the different posts it is apparent that there is not one standard for all; I agree with the suggestions that you wait until you get the hospital's guidelines so that you know you are making what they want and need. It does sound to me like there are 2 different purposes. One that stays at the hospital and has a purpose of blocking out light. And one that is given to the baby/family and it leaves with the baby.

Maybe hospitals use both so if your sister wants a particular style that maybe the one they need. Perhaps they get donations that go home with the babies, but need the more specific light reduction style.
