Janome 1600 Any Problems

Origninal Janome 1600 worked perfect until I ran out of HLX5 needles recommended in manual and dealer said I didn't need them and sold me Janome #16 needle. It skipped stitches in free motion going backwards.
Eventually I was to receive a new machine and dealer again put in #16 needle and now the new machine will not do free motion reverse.
Does anyone have experience with Janome 1600? I now have HLX5 needles to use but he put in the #16 needle before I got to use the machine.

The needle you are using is flat on one side right?
I have a 1600DBX and it uses round needles, your should be flat on one side. Our machines are basically the same.
Also, I have found that you need to loosen the top tension quite a bit. Use the pretension knob, I put my thread trough the hole closest to me and then through the one closest to the machine. If you have any questions send me a PM.

I had the same problem, I was told that the original needle shaft is very soft, if you broke a needle it could have bent the shaft just slightly, so the repair man told me to put in the needle and just slightly bring the needle down no more then the space of a paper clip. This helped with my machine. Hope it help you. Happy New Year.

Sorry to take so long in reply but I had surgery and won't be quilting for a while. I'll hang on to this and when I get back to quilting I'll give these a shot and see what happens. I knew I was going in for surgery and wanted to get these quilts finished but with all the machine problems it just didn't happen.
