I dislike my Janome also. I wish I had never purchased this machine. It is sitting in a separate bedroom with the door closed at this point. I may try to work with it later this spring.

The leaders and throat plate are essential.

I know many quilters who have loved their Janome but I am definitely not one of them!

When I had that trouble, I started about one half inch from the beginning and reverse stitched then went forward. A little time consuming but not bad.

While my current Janome (7700 - which I LOVE!) does not eat my fabric, I have used many machines of varying brands over the years that have all done this. This one little hitch doesn't diminish my love for them! In fact, I still have some of them and they are great machines! So I don't fret about this when it's such an easy fix - I simply use the single hole throatplate, make sure the needle is nice and sharp, and most important, I either hold the beginning threads, or I use a leader piece of fabric. Problem solved, I'm not stressed and it's easy peasy!
