Jealous - quilting vs piecing
#1
Before I joined this board, I was perfectly satisfied to call what I made a quilt. My mother and grandmother both made beautiful quilts which were tied. When I started quilting I tied at first then moved to stippling. Now I see real quilting and I am so jealous! I plan to try my hand at feathers next. The quilting done on some of the photos is amazing! Thanks for the inspiration. Any pointers for a regular sewing machine?

I know isn't what the ladies do on here amazing. I've been branching out alot since I joined this board here.
BTW: I love the bergello quilt in your avatar. My next project will be one. But I love yours.

For me quilting is a technique of it's own. You can combine it with piecing or appliqué in many different ways, it can highlight the design of your quilt top and enhance it - but quilting can be used alone as well in wholecloth quilting. Piecing and appliqué uses color to create contrast, quilting produces structure and variegates with light and shadow - the color of thread complements both.
You can be very creative with your quilting - it is much more than just fix the layers of a quilt together.

start small and practice- if you don't try to handle something too big at first you will have better control, and as you get rhythm you will get better and better- and work yourself up to larger and larger projects- before you know it you will be (man-handling) large quilts through your little machine :)
