    Default Jelly Cake Club

Does anyone belong to a Jelly Cake club? You receive a jelly roll, layer cake and I think a charm square. I was thinking of joining because it seems like a good deal and enough fabric to make most quilts. I am looking to build a fabric stash.

I would suggest that you build up your stash with fabric of prints and tonals that you love. I bought a lot of calicos in the 80s and wish I hadn't bought them but I did when they were 50% off and then I got my employee discount of an additional 25%. Buy only what you love and will use.

ManiacQuilter2 has great advice. I did a similar thing thinking I needed to "build a stash" . You don't just make quilts of fabrics you love and your stash will grow. Precuts are a great way to make coordinating quilts but not all precuts are the same and it is hard to make a quilt out of fabric that you think is just so so.

I love precuts. I buy jelly rolls and layer cakes. I like the layer cakes because that size will fit perfectly on most all my Go dies. I rarely have to use a rotary cutter anymore.

I started buying fabric on sale and at thrift stores to build my stash. I wish I hadn't now. Now I buy what I need for a quilt and cut up the leftovers. I have learned that I prefer certain fabrics and patterns and bright colors and love some of the new stuff. Now I'm going to get rid of the stuff I don't use, purge my stash. You do not need a large stash to be a quilter.

I think quilt kits are a nice way to add to your stash. There's always plenty of fabric so you have coordinated leftovers. I have so much trouble selecting prints for patterns. At least the kit leftovers give you something to start with.

I found a very quick way to build up my stash. I found someone that was thinning out theirs on kijiji (or craigslist) and I bought that. There was wayyyy more fabric than I anticipated, but it's fantastic.

I am so with you on this. My stash has reached silly proportions. I am about to hold a "fabric sale" to off load some of it. I also prefer to work with brighter colors.
