Jelly Roll Quilt Questions
#11
For one of my jelly roll quilts I took my strips and cut some at 20", some a out 15", 10" 5". I say about as I just eyeballed it. I threw the pieces in a bag and picked out a piece without looking. In some cases I had two small pieces together - no biggy!! I only made sure I didn't put the exact same fabric together when sewing together.

Jelly roll quilts are a hoot. My daughters and I made them on a Summer Sewing Day and I had a bag of pinwheel blocks made up from scraps and two of us picked out blocks and used them as a row on the top. The third person liked them so much she used two rows, one at the top and one at the bottom. Really jazzed them up. YOU are the artist. Do what you want. I might remind you that if you make a Jelly Roll race quilt and add extra strips it will turn them from horizontal to vertical...but that's okay, another version to try.

I made my own jelly rolls but cut them wider than 2 1/2". My fabrics were all shades of gray with a bright square sewn between each piece. With the border it made a twin size quilt.

When I am working on a quilt that I don't have printed instruction from, I print out a picture of the quilt. I think that Jenny was on a recent show of F&P seen on PBS demonstrating this quilt. I would never want to deal with all that length of strips sewn together. I would measure off the width of your quilt and whack it off and put it up on design wall as you stitch the JR strips mixing in the shorter 22" (from your fat quarters). I would call it Whack and Go !!
Good Luck !!

I haven't made one, so you might want to wait to hear from someone who has. I think you may be over-thinking it. Everything you mentioned -- cutting strips in half, starting with a 9" strip, yes you do cut the fold (you can even cut before sewing, or before you get to the folded end) -- is correct. You stop the folding and sewing once the quilt is the finished size you are looking for, which will be when the width and length of the piece (before folding) looks proportional to you.
This website may help you with size considerations:

Instead of cutting your jelly roll down to fit the size of your fat quarter strips, you may want to piece the fat quarter strips to equal the jelly roll strip length (40 to 42"). That would probably make all your calculations easier.
Edit: QuiltnNan is right. Just start with a shorter strip and intermingle all the lengths. Simpler and easier than my suggestion, and scrappier than the original Jelly Roll quilt.

Fantastic website - really appreciate the math done for the different sizes! Thanks so much for posting the site!

When we did the Jelly Roll Race, I did not have the means to purchase a Jelly Roll, so I selected several fabrics from my stash and cut a bunch of 2 1/2" strips, many more than I would need. One of our guild members came to that meeting but did not have a jelly roll, so since I had already selected 40 strips to use. I told her to pick some as well.
It was fun to watch her select her strips for the project. By the way, I still have a container of 2 1/2" strips that I use for various scrappy projects.

I have made several JR quilts, and that is the only way I make them, with scraps cut in 2 1/2 in strips of all lengths. Many times I join them together with white 2 1/2 squares for more interest. Let your imagination run!

what a great idea. I'm going on retreat in a week & jr 2 is what we're making. I'd like to thank you, Anita for asking about jr & to thank all the ones who responded with great suggestions.
