Hey, folks, Can anyone tell me whether machine applique is judged as being equal to hand applique in a show? Provided it is well done, of course. I want to get into applique, but am not sure which type to do. I'm hoping you all will tell me machine applique is acceptable. Thanks for your help!

I'd like to answer your question confidently, but I am not quite sure. I know here, in WV it depends on the show. Usually, they give you the guidelines. Do you have any ideas on the shows you want to enter? If so, you could try to get more information.

I have seen and read where some shows do not find machine sewn binding appropriate, but I do not know about applique. I would also recommend that you contact the shows or fairs you want to enter your quilts in and see what their policies are on this. There may also be different rules for "art" quilts, I know landscapes are in a different catagory and quilters use raw edge applique there and machine stitch around the edges or stipple them down.

I was present at a judging this fall for a quilt show, I sure learnd alot what the judges look for.
They have different catagories. So you would enter the quilt according to the catagory. They should get the same respect if it done by hand or machine.
Personally I like hand applique , it is portable, you can take it anywhere(almost) to work on,and it is relaxing. Try something new.

Yes I have worked as a scribe for several AQS judges and they do go by category and I think it was either Sharon Craig or Nancy Brennon Daniels that said they never divide hand or machine work as a good job is a good job either way you do it and you are right being around judges is really a learning experience Happy Quilting Dodie
