Just because?

Right after I made my first Afghan (not quilting, yet relevant), my oldest DGD was at my house and asked who it was for. I told her I didn't know yet. She said, "Ooh, can I have it?" I told her that it wasn't made in her favorite colors. She didn't care and she's carted it around for 6 years now

Except for the occasional baby quilt or a request by a grandchild, all of my quilts are just because. I quilt for my own pleasure. One day they will all get donated. Right now I just enjoy making and having them.

Only in the last few years have I given away any of my quilts. I make what excites me, for me.
My quilts are complicated and time intensive, an outlet for my creativity.
rereading that sounds like I'm running down gifting quilts, I Not! Just sharing my view.

While I was working, the larger quilts that were finished were for specific people, but I made some wallhangings just because I wanted to make them. Now that I'm retired... we'll see. I'm just about finished with a "jelly roll race" quilt I made this past week because my quilt room is all askew, waiting for new windows/trim to be stained. I was able to work on it at two quilt group meetings, and chose it both because I wanted to try the pattern and because I couldn't get to most of my fabric to work on anything else! I'll post a photo when I've finished the binding. It will be a donation/charity quilt.

Sure! Nothing wrong with doing something just for fun. I really enjoy the planning and piecing part of quilting the most, so some of the tops don't get quilted down in a timely manner because that isn't where my fun is. I consider a completed top as a finished project, even if it isn't a finished quilt
Sometimes we get motivated by an idea, technique or a collection of fabric or whatever. I have a small group and a friend I quilt with so sometimes need projects that travel well or are at least in a stage that travels.
A lot of these projects end up as donation quilts but I never know which ones will be given away so I make all of them to the same standards of design and quality as I do for special projects.

Most of mine are just because. I've only made three quilts that were specifically for someone. However, I have two that I need to make up, one for a cousin's 75 birthday and the other for my youngest granddaughter's 21st birthday. Cousin's quilt needs to be done by end of October, still have a year for granddaughter's.

I think that is the way I quilt all the time. Find a pattern and get it because... Go to the quilt shop for blades and see several beautiful pieces of fabric that feel soft/warm and buy a few yards and some from the same fabric line, just in case!!!
