I use plastic shoe boxes. When an idea hits, I write out as much as I can draw somewhat of a resemblance stick it to the top of the shoe box lid and as I find fabric in it goes. I have about 6 of these stacked up and 2 have everything ready to go as soon as I finish these 2 Quilts for Kids.org. I keep a journal where I write color schemes I see that turn me on, borders, blocks, ideas for quilts. Designs in tiles, whatever that can be used goes into my journal. Of course, I am now on journal # 3. But when I have a creative block, I pull out the journals and flip thru and always it restarts the creativity.

What I pay for my long arming varies. A penny and a half to two cents a square inch for basic overal meandering type stuff up to seven cents is the most I have paid for custom. My custom work has always involved working around satin stitched applique which she has to do alot of starting/stopping, positioning types of thing and a couple different motifs which is why she told me it cost more. I have never had anything down as intricate as some of the feathers etc on this board so I cant say about that. I provide my own batting. Some places charge you extra for thread, my LA doesnt and she squares it with serger trimmed edges when she is done.

I'm pretty new at this and only on my 4th quilt but decided when I started to finish up a project before I started another. As I listen to all your stories I wonder if I will be able to stick to that plan. I do like things to stay kinda organized or it gets to crazy for me. Good luck to all of you sorting out what has to be done first.....and last!

I usually form my 'pattern' to fit the person I'm making the quilt for, then doing research in all my magazines and books. BUT
I have a dilema: I'm in the middle of a quilt for my oldest granddaughter. I promised her a quilt for her wedding. Well, they just celebrated their 3rd anniversary.

And now, my next oldest is getting married in Nov. and I already am planning an Irish Chain quilt for her. Which should I work on next?

I have several projects waiting, but none that I specifically chose. Somehow my projects seem to find me. I guess I'm just a sucker for a pretty quilt.

I am not really sure how I decide on my next project. They sort of find me I guess?
Our local craft group is having an "airing of the quilts" in September and so I have been working on quilts for that as well as some Christmas gifts (to break things up a little). A friend has asked me to make her some matching pillow cases to go with a quilt I made for her last year. Just need to work out the dimensions of a pillowcase and how to fit the pattern of the quilt onto it. Thank goodness I have some material left over from it stashed away.
Have almost finished my quilts now and so am in limbo as to what I will do next project wise?

I am a newish quilter. I was sure that I would only do one quilt at a tiem. Right now I have finished two and have three more "working on". I am not sure how that happened? And my wish list is getting very long. I don't know if you count material collections as quilts your wourking on? I just want to make them all right now! :) :)

My way is simple for me. I have 5 pizza type boxes that I use for WIP's. No more than 5 at any given time. 2 of them are BOM's so not alot of time consuming things. Get the block done, put it in the box and wait til next BOM comes out. I also have a box of squares that I'm making D4 to 9 patch. I work on them randamly as they are destined for small completed projects, table runners, hot pads, etc. I have 4 quilt tops finished just waiting to be quilted but that won't happen til fall when the weather cools down. So I have 2 empty project boxes waiting for something to put in them!

I have several more projects in mind but at the moment they are still in my head, not put on the *to do* list.

I originally swore I would only work on one project start to finish before starting another one, but that went out the window! Yesterday I was babysitting my DGD for about 3 hours and we made her momma a pin cushion. (Well, she sat on my lap while I sewed) but it was from her, she's just 3 1/2 and is too hyper to learn to sew just yet. The night before I experimented with making a pot holder and was really pleased how it turned out, until while putting the binding on, I realized I only put one layer of batting in the middle instead of 2. Oh well, it can be used for a candle mat, or a thingey to put under my warm plate as it sits in my lap. (I ususally eat in front of the TV!) Nobody wants to eat at the table.

Anyway, that is how I'm doing things at the moment. I don't want so many projects going that I won't get anything completed.
