I have seen on here some photos of quilts and quilt blocks that look like a kaleidoscope. Maybe that's not what it is called, but it looks like there is bright color in the middle and then it jumps out at you. Seems like most of the fabric is black background with brightly colored flowers. Is there a book or something somewhere to tell you how to cut these blocks to look like that?

there are books you can buy for making kaleidoscopes

I wrote one on making my Dresden Kaleidoscopes and I send out a free template for it. This is one link that you can see how mine are made.

then there are a number of people on here that are doing the One Block Wonders. Here is one K3n has made. If you have questions on this one you can ask her she is a good one to help you. THere are several other people doing them also.

I've made some more complicated ones before, but the directions for this one seem very easy and clear. You use 20 -25 1/4 yds of fabric, not FQ.

The book Kaleidoscopes Quilts by Paula Nadelstern is a great book with lovely photos, though I have not actually made a quilt yet!
