Rice is nice. I've had mine for 20 yesrs or so. It does smell, but it is not an offensive odor. Just like cooked rice. No kitty litter as the dust will sift out of it. I've used it to stuff draft dodgers, and there is always dust there where they've laid.

The kitty litter would make it really heavy.

[quote=Greenheron]Most brands of kitty litter will break down into dust plus the least amount of moisture causes clumping.

yes, do be careful of the moisture with kitty litter! i left my cat's box outside and it rained. now have a box of clay.

i would think the other options would be better.

As I know cost is a factor with this stuff, I have heard a few people use cherry hulls. There is a place online that sells them as well as ebay. They aren't cheap but I do wonder what the smell (or should I say aroma) is when heated. Might be good!!! I think the cat litter would eventually emit a little dust through the fabric.

As I am a coffee nut, I am going to start saving my coffee grounds and try that out!

I don't know about the kitty litter, but think it would absorb moisture and swell, I add cinnamon to my rice and love it,,,, You can add anything and I've even put lavendar in them

I would not use cat liter either. But I am highly allergic to the dust and something else in the liter. I can't go into my basement laundry room with out sneezing and having a reaction to the dust from the liter box. plus if you have cats you run the risk of them peeing on it all the time.

Where can I find cherry pits?
In Michigan,we have them at the local grain elevator.I had a cramp in my calf last night ,used my cherry pits and was able to sleep, I love mine. I would be afraid of using and heating the cat litter, will it leave a chemical residue in your microwave?

Just Google 'buckwheat hulls'. Yes, they hold the heat well and being angular, don't shift so much.
I did and it said "not for use in microwavable products" I am really confused. I guess I will stick to rice for now.
