    Default To knot or not

When I learned FMQ I was taught to make very very small stitches at the end of a run. Ive never made knots and sunk with machine stitching. Anybody else?

I do the same. I started to make knots by pulling up the bottom thread, working a little then tying a knot and embedding it. Finally I decided to go with small stitches. If I run out of bobbin thread, I make small stitches over the ended thread to start another run. Works for me.

I start quilting on the batting then on the edge of the quilt, I make tiny stitches.

I prefer to make knots and bury. I was used to doing that with hand quilting, so it seems natural to me.

Its a case by case decision with me. Sometimes with a slicker thread (I use alot of Glide), I tend to get knots on the bottom. Even if I am careful and move just a bit, I still get a snarl on the bottom.(and yes I bring my bobbin thread up to start) I try to bury my tiny stitches on the side...if the knot shows up, I bury by hand. With my other threads, it does not seem to be much of an issue. Maybe its just ME! HA! I also try to bury as I go so I don't have tons to do when I am ready to bind...

I also just do the tiny stitches at the beginning and at the end.

I do tiny stitches on practice pieces, but I still prefer to bury my knots. I pull my threads to the back & then bury them. Nothing wrong with either method. They both are beautiful when done properly.

I always do knots. I bury them for quilts that will be used as quilts, and I leave the knot unburied on the back for wallhangings. I personally don't like the look of thread buildup so I don't make multiple stitches in place and really try not to travel quilt either.

I do both, it just depends on the situation. If I'm quilting something complex where I'm breaking thread in the middle of the quilt and I think that starting with some tiny stitches will detract (for example, if I were quilting with a thicker contrasting thread on a section of solid colored fabric) then I bring the bobbin thread to the top, tie a knot and bury it in the batting. Most of the time I do the tiny stitches at the beginning and end of a section of FMQ since it is really hard to detect if you are using a matching thread that is 40wt or thinner, esp. on a print fabric. And it is a lot faster than taking the time to knot and bury.
