Just wondering if you all could help me. I showed my dbf the jelly roll quilt I'm working on for my mom and he said he liked it. Then went on to say that he really likes the kind of quilts my grandma used to make you know the ones that have all kinds of different fabrics that come from any where clothing other blankets etc. So I decided I wanted to make him a quilt like grandma used to make. What I'm wondering is how many 4 1/2 inch squares does it take to make a lap quilt? Thanks for helping :)

What size do you consider a lap quilt?
will you be sashing the 4 1/2" squares?
    Having a border?

You can make a lap quilt any size you want. If you have one that you now use, measure it. Then just divide by 4 to get the number of blocks you need for width & length. A finished block is 4" when made with 4 1/2" squares. You can map it out on paper to see how many rows you need.

I am using a 48x72in pattern for my lap quilts. If you do a search on google images for 4 inch square quilt you should find one that you like. Then just count the squares across and down. Good luck...can't wait to see it.

If you want to make the 48 X 72 quilt as suggested by carolaug, you will need 216 squares cut 4 1/2 inches. That gives you 12 squares across and 18 squares down your quilt. That would be with no sashing and no borders, just the squares as the quilt. If you cut a 4/1/2 strip across the width of your fabric, you will need a total of 24 strips of fabric. You can get 9 squares from each width. Hope this helps.

We make our lap quilts for the church 45 by 54. 11 squares across by 14 down would give you 44x56. With a moderate sashing, that'd make a decent size for most men. 11 x 14 = 154 squares. Did grandma use sashing? If not, I'd add another row both ways, so it'd be 12x15 which is 180 squares.

What a nice idea to make him what HE wants.

First decide how big you want your quilt.
    I like them 60 X 72 inches

If you are using 4 1/2" cut squares, subtract off the 1/2" for seam allowances and use the number 4"

    60" divided by 4" = 15 blocks across
    72" divided by 4" = 18 blocks down

    15 times 18 = 270 4"

    48" X 60"
    48" divided by 4" = 12 blocks
    60" divided by 4" = 15 blocks

    12 blocks times 15 blocks = 180 blocks

Use this formula to make your DBF's quilt the size that he would like.
I hope this helps you :D:D:D

Sew one like I sew.....cut some pieces, lay them out. Not big enough??? Cut some more, lay them out. Not big enough??? Cut some more, lay them out. When you get to the size you want....STOP! LOL
