    That's what I've always done too. Now I also take a phone pic but I still use the old method as well. The pic is just a backup.

    I use masking tape pieces to mark row & block # or I'd never get the top sewn in the right order.

    I take pictures of the final layout and often along they way I'll take pictures of variations and see which my son and husband like better as well. My son has a very good eye for color/design.

    I used my digital camera all the time so that I can get the layouts correct. It's a lifesaver and like the OP said, you can download the pic to your laptop and have a bigger image if you need it.
