    the Burgundy on the top and bottom or the sides. For my niece, her favorite colors are purple, burgundy,

    I like the first layout. The second seems to make it look wider than it is long

    If its a square, it won't matter which way you piece it. The thing that will matter is how she grabs it and throws it over herself. the top can become the sides or vice versa.

    have you tried to mix the red in randomly instead of "stripes" on the edges?
