I found this newspaper clipping in an old book from a Texas newspaper dated May, 30, 1895.

    For Young People

    Learning To Sew

    My Grandmama says that the
    Right way to sew
    Is to put little
    stitches
    Along in a row.

    That sounds very easy,
    I almost know
That some spect'cles and things would
    Help me to sew.

I try very hard now, but
    Isn't it slow?
The stitches won't half of them stay in a row.
I'm sure as can be that the
    People don't know
What very hard work 'tis to
    Learn how to sew.

I'll do like my grandma; I'll
    Sing soft and low-
Put my foot on a stool-make
    My rocking chair go-
And put on her spect'les -then
    Stitch, stitch, oh, ho!
I fink (sic) I've found out how to
    Learn how to sew.
    -N. Y. World.

I have memories of being about 3 yrs old at my MAMA's house. the old ladies would come, the quilting would commence and I played in my training pants underneath the quilt and frame. They would let me "quilt" in their laps. I am sure my attention span was that of a nat and that they politely ripped it out when I got down. Thanks for letting me share with all of you. I am 61 now. I think she would be proud of me and my work today.
