    Default Leftover batting

Is there any kind of general rule as to how much it too much when piecing together odds and ends of batting for one quilt? My current project is about 55" x 55". I'm trying to use up my old batting (all the same kind) rather than buy more. I have about 12-14 pieces in various sizes that I can sew together to cover the area needed . Is this considered too many?

No rules here. I just pieced 9 pieces to use in a quilt. And I think they were different brands but all were cotton blends. Seemed to be similar weight. Once the quilting was done you couldn’t tell the difference

I piece together as many as I can. I also use the same kind of batting usually.

For me it would depend on the quilt. If it was light fabric with large open background areas, I don’t piece because you can sometimes see the shadow through light fabrics. If the top and backing were dark, go for it!

No rules. I sew my scraps together and use them. I think if the fabric can be pieced, so can the batting.

It sure is o.k. to piece your batting. You paid for all of it so why not use all of it? Same thing with the back side of fabric. If you like the back side better than the front or if it looks better in different parts of your quilt you can use the back as well as the front. You paid for both sides so why not make something with both sides?

I use as many of my batting scraps as I need when I'm using them up. The key is to make sure they lie flat and don't pleat or bump up...

I piece all my batting scrap pieces into quilt sizes and give to the guild's donation guilt group. The batting is the biggest cost for making donation quilts.

I piece batting all the time. Too expensive to throw away scraps these days. When piecing, I like to use my serpentine stitch at the widest. Does a great job of sewing the edges together. I butt edges together tightly, and the stitch takes care of the rest.
