I have both 5" and 10", and while I tried marking an old square with tape to save the cost of the tool, I found it not accurate and confusing with all the lines. So I bit the bullet, bought both, and have not regrettedd it. It's easy to become addicted to this play on color, and no matter what I use, it looks great. Also love the way the border is built right in. There is some waste, but if you have the patience, you CAN use the little left over squares. I give all my scraps to textile and fashion students, who love them and use them and share them with others.

Hi,
They recommend 5" squares. I usually by charm packs, cause there already color co-ordinated, and then I cut 5" squares of neutral color muslin as the background. I usually make table runners or small cuddle quilts for charity with this tool.
