    One reason that log cabins have remained a mainstay of quilting is their diversity. You do not have to do a strict light in the center and radiate out to darker, you can mix them up. You can do the 'white' side all one fabric or vary the shades. You can make the quilt any size you want and configure the logs in any shape you want. I suggest that you google log cabin quilts and look around until you see a design you like. This is a lot quicker than rearranging the blocks on a design wall a hundred times and then not remembering which one you preferred (experience speaking here!).
