I recently learned that my mother has a lone star that my great-grandmother pieced. It is only the star . I have considered appliquing the star on to a wide backing. The QB newletter today gave instructions on sizing the triangles. Can I get away with applique? Seems like it would be easier. Anybody else tried that?
Next problem would be to spirit it out of her house, I would like for it to be a surprise.

LOL !! my mother pieced a lone star years and years ago-- never read a quilt book in her life- so decided the way to finish it was to applique it onto a sheet........never did complete it into a quilt--many times I have sat down to take it apart and set in the background pieces.......just can't do it. I am sure one day I will sandwich it and finish it as is and treasure it forever because it is a reminder of my late mother. I know this does not help you.....but I felt like sharing :)

I would definitely try hand applique. By turning it into a "wall-hanging" everyone who enters could enjoy it!

It's your quilt. Do it and enjoy it.

i would applique it to a pretty backing, not a plain white sheet. if you think the center is too thick that way, you can cut the backing from behind the star.
