The Lonestar that was made by DGF has 8 points and this was back in the early half of the last century around 1950.
I never saw a five point either.

My avitar is a Lone Star. I am making Lone Star's for all my children. The one pictured is for my youngest son. It has 1,500+ diamonds in it. But I love making them. LOL
    Good luck on your search.

I have been reading this QB for about a yr. now, and we have alot of QuiltSmart People here. Seems if there is a question asked, someone knows the answer or where to get it. Thanks in advance..
Like someone else said, the angle of each diamond is 72" I'm attaching a jpeg.

    A 60 degree diamond makes a 6 pointed star.
    A 72 degree diamond makes a 5 pointed star.
A 45 degree diamond makes an 8 pointed star.

    see catmcclure's diagram above.

Looking again today and I see this reference to the 5 pointed star as the Lone Star re Texas, maybe this is the source of your Mom's recollection? http://westcolumbiachamber.com/lonestarflag.aspx

My question about a lone star or Texas star is: Can you make one using jelly roll strips sewn together and then cut at 45 degree angle? Would it work for 60 and 72? In my head this seems like it would work but then again...

Please remember that almost any traditional quilt or block has several names and many names have several quilts/blocks. This is a folk art. Variations are to be expected and celebrated. Of course whatever your mother grew up with is "right" to her. In Barbara Brackman's encyclopedia of pieced quilt patterns, I found a 5 pointed star with some resemblance to what I call a Lone Star or Star of Bethlehem.
