    I just did an octagon shaped quilt before Christmas. Keep the backing square. I just floated the top, as others have said - basted the edges and went to work. It worked great.

    I did a 60" circle. I loaded square backing and batting and floated the circle on it. Worked great.

    Thanks for all your replies. I wasn't sure if I could just float the top or if I needed to baste it some way. I'll just try to float it and if that doesn't work, well, it won't be the first time I've had to rip out quilting! I'll spray baste if necessary.
