I have always hand quilted my layers together or tied them together. Now I see all of these beautiful quilts done by longarm machines....Does anyone still to it the old fashion way?? Can you put a quilt together on a regular sewing machine?? Learned from my GM and thats all I know how to do the quilting...Any help would be appreciated.

i hand quilt, i quilt on my domestic machine, i quilt on my long-arm.

you are asking for help- but i don't understand what the question is- other than do any of us (do it) many of us hand quilt- many domestic machine quilt-many long-arm...
    and some -- all 3

so, if you have specific issues/questions- ask- someone will be able to help.

I have never quiltd on a machine, just do it all by hand. I have begun sending some out to my friend who LA's but I stil prefer hand quilting. It just takes so long, and I sometimes get 'top happy' and just keep making tops, so think I have about, oh, I don't know, 20 tops? So the ones I love I do myself, and the ones that are ok, I send to my friend. I don't care for tied tops. I can't say way, just prefer them to be quilted.

I don't have the patience for hand quilting, I have to force myself to do hand applique every once and a while just to prove I can do it. I'm a machine girl all the way. I just my standard machine and share a LA with my mom.

I used to quilt by hand and still do on those that are "special" but I finally learned to FMQ on my domestic and I love it, especially that it takes less time.

I am a handquilter and I will always be! But I am full of respect to all who can handle a domestic machine or a longarm for quilting.

I do all three as well but since getting my LA I haven't done any on my DSM but I would do smalls like table runners, placemats etc. I still want to try a QAYG as well.

Hand quilting takes me a very long time to do and I only do it for myself. On average it takes me 3 - 4 years to complete a HQ top. But I love to have handwork while watching TV so I will still HQ. I can get a lot of quilts quilted in a short period of time on the LA and I will LA for others, in fact the bulk of my LA work has been for others. Unlike many here, I do not have a huge backlog of tops. In fact I have no fully completed tops ready to go but am working on a couple right now.

Yes - you can certainly quilt using a domestic sewing machine. It may take a bit to figure out how best to maneuver the bulk of the quilt around, but it is very doable. Harriet Hargrave's Heirloom Machine Quilting is an excellent resource for quilting on domestic machines.

    Cheers, K
