Dolphygyrl gives a good suggestion. You can do a simple overcast stitch that would be pretty effective without dropping the cash for a serger.

I have a Singer Serger that I'm quite happy with. I am mostly a quilter, but I do make other things every now and then and it has come in very handy.

Another thought would be snipping the edges with pinking shears to reduce fraying.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

I have seen lots of great reviews for this Brother serger. .I paid 900$ for my Janome serger and based upon how little I have actually used it, I should have bought this serger. And I am not a fan of Brother. Love my Janome...but I am Not using my serger like I should.

I have a Bernina, which is probably pricier than what you're looking for, but definitely check craigslist! Lots of people get frustrated and give up on their sergers, or don't know how to use them, and you can find some great bargains there.

I mostly use mine for seams on things I don't want to have to line and rolled hems on ruffles and skirts. It's also great for knits, but I don't do a ton of sewing with knits. If you only use it for quilting though, I'd back up the others suggestion of just using an overlock (zig zag) on your regular machine. GL!

Look for an older model. I purchased my Babylock serger over 15 years ago and it's still going strong. I, too, have learned to thread it by "tying on" the new threads....all four of them; including the needles!
