Does anyone bother to actually read the thread first?

I think the quilt is made up of split 9 patches like the picture below. EQ keeps blowing up on me so I can't make the quilt.

But it you put 4 of these blocks, dark sides towards the center, you can see how it would form the central motif. And flip them and you get the frame.

Maybe EQ will cooperate later in the day. I'll try again then.
Right now I want to throw my laptop out the window. :hunf:

If you take a Split 9 Patch and turn it so the 4 darks come together in the center, you'll have this block but I'm still puzzling over the sashing.

Look at both of the "Joan's" examples. http://www.quilterscache.com/S/Split...ock_Page2.html

It's not sashing, that's why you're puzzled. ;) The layout is actually a tessellation, simple in design, very complex in coloring and could be tricky in putting together correctly. I don't use EQ, so you'll have to settle for Excel for the 'map'.

The basic unit is 12 split 9-patches in a 'plus sign' layout. They stagger and nest with each other. Awesome design with great possibilities.

    Here's the quilt.

It's made up entirely of the split 9patch blocks I posted above, all with the same coloring (light/dark placement).

For the quilt below, I "closed" the navy streaks at the top and the bottom which resulted in having to put 8 blank yellow 9patches. But that's just a personal preference.

If you leave the top and bottom rows of 9 patches off, then you don't have to worry about it.

You can make the 9patches any size you want, depending what size quilt you want.

    This quilt is 100" x 86", with 6" blocks, in a 18x14 block setting.
Just flip its orientation for a queen size quilt. EQ is
    weird sometimes. ;-)

The 2nd pic is a sample with the blocks outlined.

I figured it out and it's even easier than I suspected. You make the split 9 patch and turn all the darks to the center then you surround that with more split 9 patches and turn those with the darks to make the "sashing". It uses very large blocks comprised of 16 split 9 patch blocks. The first 4 in the center with the darks turned to the center and the remaining 12 blocks are all arranged around the center and turned to form a ring.

I see MTS beat me to it so now you have 2 patterns of the same thing.

I love the simple ones that look so complicated once they're assembled.

    There are two parts.

I have made several of these quilts (the first one in a class) and the pattern is simple (when you have the pattern) and fun to make. As a previous poster noted the book is available on Amazon and is entitled - "Square Dance" - revised edition - by Martha Thompson.
