Machine Quilting a "Thinking Outside the Block"????

I made this one for my eldest son for Christmas. It's a king-size and too big for my frame so it had to be quilted on my kitchen table. Because of its size, I opted to do a straight stitch 1/4-inch from each seam in the block and meander in the borders.

First, SID around the squares to anchor it. Then I'd just follow the pattern in the light green area. Could stitch around the flowers in the center. Then could do the 'cross-hatching' - straight lines on the diaganol in two different directions so they look like diamonds. Or meander in the two outer borders.

Wow lots of great suggestions here. Too bad I wimped out and am making mine into a window covering. I think you'll do fine with SITD-you're comfortable with it, it's such a beautiful quilt the fabric speaks for itself. Just go for it. After your FMQ class, make another one and try the swirls and feathers (and make me very jealous). Your friends will love this--who wouldn't??

I haven't done a ton of quilting yet, but I have read that quilt with sharp, geometric blocks look better with softer, curvy lines in the quilting. So I would consider a sweeping, curvy design which would work good with your walking foot.

I just checked this out for the first time. It's such a neat pattern and you've done a great job piecing. My thought might be to straight stitch on your borders a 1/4" from each stitch line (sort of like trapunto) and maybe echo around the centre of the block maybe three times. I went to Paducah National Quilt Museum in March and it seems like all the new hot ideas is to stitch with metallic thread. I'm very interested to see what the "winning" suggestion is going to be.
