I am a relatively new machine free motion quilter. I can quilt if I follow marked lines pretty well but just winging it is a challenge. I recently bought a 36" piece of Machine Quilting Skill Builder #1 fabric and it is really helping me learn different designs. I have made a sandwich with the practice material on the top, batting, and brown solid on the bottom. I'm using pink thread in the bobbin so that my stitching will show against the brown backing. It is proving to be an excellent learning project and refferal for future designs.

I purchased my material at a LQS but have seen it on ebay also.

But is it just another way of following marked lines? I guess I don't understand the product. Please explain?

Yes, you are still following lines but it has helped me learn the patterns and get them into my memory. It has also helped me with knowing where on my project to use certain design such as on blocks, borders, triangles etc. I like to warm up on it before I try the pattern on the real thing!

It's a panel with samples of several different patterns that you stitch over.
