Interesting. I guess expectations are different in different societies. My husband did not even expect me to change my name! (I have no idea what his family thought.)

Yes, I ALWAYS do! I figure if any of my quilts turn up somewhere where no one knows about them, their history will also include "my" family name as well as my husband's. But, I kept my maiden name as my middle name when I got married and dropped my original middle name. My mom did that, and my sister and I followed suit.

Lots of my friends did not change their names either. Is it unusual in the US?
It's getting more and more common not to change your last name. Lots of women now hyphenate (ie Jones-Smith). It's still really a personal choice. Has anyone heard of any MEN who take their wife's name?

I know one personally, and the daughter of another.

I don't have a married name, so I just put my maiden name.

Hmmm, this is something I never thought about. Both my maiden name and my married name are 10 letters long, so I don't think I want both of them. I'll have to ponder on this question for awhile.

I haven't, but I've only made one quilt that I actually put a label on. I should put a label on the other two quilts I made in past years though.

I'm not sure what name to put, I probably should put all my names on it - maiden, ex (my children's last name), and current, but that would be rather cumbersome. However, from a genealogy point of view, it would make sense. (And my mother was a genealogist, so she would appreciate it. In fact, in her later years, she went by her maiden name followed by our last name - "First name, MI, Maiden name-married name. That's what's on her tombstone at her request.)

Someone mentioned that in other cultures, women do not change their names. I worked with Burundi refugees, and this is their practice. To many of them, their name is part of their identity, and changing it to their husband's name is unthinkable. The children in these cultures take the father's name.

years ago I made a huge wall hanging for a wedding present. She was a dear friend and, quite frankly, I didn't think the marriage would last. It didn't and she now has a beautiful southwestwen WH with her own name on it. So it depends what you want -- I don't think there are any rules.
    Towels are monogrammed both ways.

A family genealogist would appreciate the info. I have two in my family and you'd be amazed as to where they look for info.
