Post Making a finished 12.5" disappearing 9 patch...

Can anyone tell me what size blocks to use in making a finished 12.5" disappearing nine patch? The ones I've done end up only 12".... Grr......

You start with 3 patches across. If you want to add a half inch, you would need to divide that by 3 which isn't pretty. I would add a quarter inch to each of your starting squares, then trim the final block. Do a sample with scrap fabric to verify.

This is just a guess but when you cut your squares up, the outside corner stays the same size. So I think that your squares need to be cut at 8.5" I would just find a piece of paper and draw it out. When you cut down the center, your strip (the one that looks like sashing) should be 4.25"

OOPS, that is a 12" finished. That is going to be difficult because when cutting the center of the 9 patch, the size of the square needs to be divisable by 3. Hope that makes sense.

Found this - right here on the QB! I have not tested it yet. I would make it larger and trim all blocks down.

Just curious....why do you want to make such an odd finished size?

'Cause I'm using 12" finished blocks. I'm making graduation quilts of various themed blocks for DGKs. I guess if you were making a quilt using all DP9 patch blocks, the chart would be helpful but I just want to make 1 block.

    I meant 12.5" unfinished - 12" finished .... Dummy me...

Here is how to figure the size starting block you need: ( Finished Size + 2") ÷ by 3

I always make my nine patches with five inch square charms. I make all my center squares the same color in each nine patch.
