I have a kit for an activity quilt and one of the things I really like is chalkboard fabric. Of course it will be a couple years before he can use it.

Here;s an idea .... rather than giving it ALL to him now. You could keep making parts and give him a new set at birthdays, Christmas etc. So for now the basics ... and then the extra shapes to velcro on and/or play with for the pockets, could come in theme sets later.

The magnet idea is a great one!

Since they have all kinds of fabric now with characters on it, I put pics of Sponge Bob, Mickey Mouse, Poo Bear, Bob the Builder, etc. These are all cartoons he'll also see on TV and in story books.

If you have any transfer fabric, small pictures of mom and dad, grandma, grandpa, etc. are also fun and any family pets they may have...cowboys, tricycles, and any special toys, even addeda Big Wheel; we also added a Dallas Cowboys symbol, since we live in Texas. He still has fun with his I Spy quilt...

Someone suggested the circles and shapes for matching ... they could be with velcro or perhaps the buttons?

How about some animal shapes sewn together with just a little padding. They could be attached with velcro, or put into the pockets for storage and for play.
Great ideas, just make sure to attach the soft side of the velcro to the quilt itself so it's not scratchy, especially while he's so little.

Is this also a "counting" quilt? 1 to 10/12?
    I made one with bugs...
    1 dragonfly
    2 butterflies
    3 lightening bugs
    4 ladybugs
    5 grasshoppers
    6 bees
    7 wooly bears
    8 sow-bugs
    9 spiders
    10 ants
    11 fleas
    12 flowers
They were embroidered and appliqued and my GS had to find them all scattered around the flowers.
That might be a better idea for a later quilt. Good luck.

What ever you do, be sure to remember little ones put everything into their mouths and can choke so quickly.

How about making doors ( simple backed squares) attached to side of block to try to find matching squares. DianeC

I like the idea of two quilts - one for "now" that has nothing that come off -

And one for later when the choking hazard is less

Or you could make the activity one that is "special" and only brought out when someone is with the little one and it is a privilege to play with it.

You could add a train engin, airplane, boat, car, bulldozer truck shapes etc and have matching the pictures or the colors, ABC's and 123's would be good. If you have a block with 6 bunnies, the match would be a number 7.If you have an airplane the match would be a letter A.
