What all would I need to make a wedding ring quilt? Are there any free patterns on net for one? I know I’d need a pattern and I’m sure I’d need special rulers....Have any of you made one? If so, can you show me here?

There are different ways of making the Double Wedding Ring (DWR). Some people make the "melons" and applique them down to a whole cloth backing. You can do a couple variations of that with large squares setting in the arcs into square-ish shapes. Some people have the melon going diagonally down the middle of a square, so background triangle-ish shapes on either side and the squares of the melon in the other corners. Again, that can be appliqued or set-in. This last variation (set-in) is probably my preferred method from ease of construction, but I really like the whole solid back pieces too...

Some patterns have L(eft) and R(ight) pieces on the end of the arc to make them fit a bit easier. Some just have one piece -- and some of those expect you to trim a bit to fit while others are correct. You have to be pretty precise with your cutting and your piecing if you want all the little melon wedges exactly the same.

For both precision and if you are going scrappy and fussy cutting each piece, I really recommend getting a specialty ruler or template set -- there are many to choose from. Most of the standard sources and teachers have them, many with videos! Eleanor Burns, Sharlene Jorgenson, John Flynn, Creative Grids, on and on!

I made a double wedding ring about 35 years ago as a class at a quilt shop. I pieced the arcs out of various colors. I machine pieced it and then I hand quilted it. I have also seen the quilt made with a single piece of fabric for the arcs and they are just as pretty and easier. I don't know how much experience you have in quilting but Sharlene Jorgenson from Quilting from the Heartland has a book that includes instructions for planned, scrap & seamless arc double wedding ring and easy-to-use full-size patterns to make 15" finished circles. You can also get the book with 8 acrylic templates with the 1/4" seam allowance included and you can use your rotary cutter to cut out the fabric. A big time saver. I bought the book but I've never used it. It's on my "bucket list".

I made a wedding ring quilt a long time ago for my daughter and loved the process all the way thru. I used plastic template that I purchase from Shar Jorgensen. When I had a few minutes in the day I would cut out pieces and put them in a pizza box and when it came time to sew a block together I had all of the pieces ready to go. I'm actually in the process of starting my sister's DWR and I watched Shar Jorgensen's tutorial on it on YouTube, she's actually done a couple. I didn't get Shar's templates, they were slightly out of my budget range, but found another set from LaserThing on Amazon, applied everything Shar teaches using those templates and I was able to whistle through it without too many problems.

I have made 6 DWR quilts all of them "scrappy" with all the small pieces different colors from my scrap basket. The best templates I found to use for a DWR was "Double Wedding Ring Templates by Sharlene Jorgenson" I found that even my limited cutting skills were perfect with these. The book also provides you instruction for a variety of different designs that work with different skill levels.

Food for thought- a double wedding ring quilt is not a beginner pattern. Be honest about your skills before starting.
