My mother made them for us (11) and for the grandchildren (25 so far). She makes them square or rectangle, one layer of good flannel, double hemmed and mitered corners. They are very useful for bundling, and later as a light cover. They are also used for baby dolls.

I like the square also. But I take one corner and measure up from the peak about 4 inches and cut that straight off, then finish it. turn rt side out, then take that flat corner and pull it towards the center about 9 inches and take a ruler and measure from the flat edge center off to both sides 6-8 inches and mark. Sew from bottom edge to mark with a straight stitch. And it is finished. Helps keep the legs and feet wrapped. My kids love them for the babies especially newborns.

I have made hundreds for my kids (3) and now my sisters son... I just buy a yard and a quarter flannel. then I square it up so the flannel is square I then hem all four sides just like a normal hem. I use the "scraps" from squaring the flannel (sometimes they are larger scraps) to make birp rags!

I definitely liked the large square ones over the small store bought ones. Personally, I preferred a single layer as they dried a lot faster when washed. If I needed more warmth, I just doubled up. Later on, they became burp clothes, blankees, dust rags etc. The best one I ever had was a large square with a crocheted edge around it.

Also my method. Well, I sew them right sides together using a half inch seam allowance and then turn it right side out. Then I sew a decorative stitch just a touch more than half inch from the edge.
