You could try a Times Three quilt. They are super easy and diverse. http://www.ericas.com/quilting/patterns/A19226b.jpg

The big squares can be fussy cut if you want to do a theme. I did a nature theme for my husband and a motorcycle theme for my Dad.

Here is a picture of one that I made.

My favorite for a man - 9 patch with a snowball! This one is chocolate and turquoise for my cousin - and a white and turquoise for an aunt, both in flannel. Can you tell the turquoise was on sale, LOL!

Any of the suggestions below would be good - the labyrinth is great, as well as storm at sea, log cabin, carpenter's wheel, etc. I think a simple block design might work best for a 40 year old man.

Choose a pattern that you like and just use more masculine colors.

I've made each of my sons a Bargello. My avatar is the one I made for my oldest.

After making one for myself, I'm again collecting plaid flannels for two more--one for my son and one for my stepson.

This one is just squares, but I think it would be great in a turning twenty pattern.

I agree. Warm wishes is an easy pattern that looks great. I just finished a baby quilt for a boy with frogs. It may be my new favorite pattern.
